Painting Wainscoting
If you have wainscoting in your home and looking for a fresh look to it, why not paint it?If they are already painted, you can certainly change the appearance of the room with a new colour!A few materials needed for the job at hand: - Wood putty
- Latex caulking
- Sandpaper
- Paintbrush
- Roller
- Latex Primer
- Semi-gloss or Gloss Paint
Preparation As with any other painting job, preparation is key to a professional job.To start with, go over the wainscoting area and fill in any holes and indents with the wood putty. Use the latex caulking for any long cracks, etc.Once the wood putty is dry, give it a light sanding. Priming Now you're ready for a coat of primer. I like using a primer that has a high adhesiveness to it and also a stain blocker. Zinsser makes a few brands such as Bullseye 1-2-3. It's a latex (water-base) primer so cleans up nicely with soap and water. Cut in with the paintbrush in the corners and use the roller the main areas. Depending on the depth of the grooves, you may need a roller with a higher "nap" - thicker to get paint into the gooves. I tend to use a 10-11 millimeter (3/8") nap roller. Wait 3-4 hours for the primer to fully dry. Finish Coat Apply the final finish coat with your preference of a Semi-gloss or higher Gloss Paint using the same technique as above. One tip is to apply it thinly so the paint won't flow heaviliy into the joints, etc. If you like to bring more focus to the wainscoting in the room, try choosing a colour deeper than that of your walls. Some also like the flow of the other trim work (baseboards, door casings) and bring that colour right into the wainscoting.
