Table of Contents Painting Over Oil Base Paint on Trim Painting Over Oil Base Paint on Trim If your existing wood trim and baseboards in a room have an old oil-based paint applied to them, and you’d like to repaint them using latex paint, there are some key steps to follow first to ensure good adherence and avoid peeling. The first thing to remember is that proper preparation is needed. Preparing your trim for painting is very simple. Clean the surfaces if they are greasy or dirty. Usually mild soap and water is all that is needed. Rinse well and allow to dry for a couple of hours. An additional cleaning can be done using a liquid sander/deglosser. Sanding isn’t necessary if the surfaces are in good shape. If your trim has excessive brush marks or chips in the paint then I recommend sanding to smooth out these areas. Remember, paint is not a “filler” – if you see the imperfections, they will still show up after painting. All minor repairs need to be done before priming by applying wood filler and caulking by the walls, etc (make sure the caulking is classified as “paintable”). Apply one coat of an oil-based primer engineered for latex paints or the one I love to use is the latex-based primer from Zinsser called Bulls-eye 1-2-3.
